Common Pronunciation Mistakes in English - English Lesson via Skype

Common Pronunciation Mistakes in English - English Lesson via Skype Click edit button to change this text. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo. Common Pronunciation Mistakes in English Today, were looking at English pronunciation, how to pronounce certain words in English. And in particular were looking at some key mistakes that lots of students make whether they are Spanish, French, Italian,or Russian.I let you into a little secret. Even English people make mistakes with their pronunciation. There are lots of people in different parts of the UK that drop Hs all the time and they never pronounce them when they talk. This is how they pronounce my name Harry:Arry, ave we got this?Arry, ave you got that?Theyre supposed to be native speakers but they dont always get it right. So dont worry about it. Youre in a big club of people who get English pronunciation wrong. Were going to try and correct some of the common pronunciation mistakes in English today.Lets start with some easy ones that everybody in every country gets wrong. And it’s the words:thoughalthoughthroughthoroughlyAll of these words start with two letters th like the word the. And thats the sound we want to g et correct. If we take the word THOUGH I think you hear that sound th though.Though. You try it. Though.Once again though. And then we take it all:thoughalthougheven thoughAlso we have the word THROUGH. It also starts with TH.He walked through the door.He walked through the forest. You try it. throughThe same sound as when you throw a ball. Past tense he threw the ball. And finally that word THOROUGHLY again. He thoroughly enjoyed himself. = meaning He really enjoyed himself.Thoroughly.You try it thoroughly. Common Pronunciation Mistakes in English - Silent H Now I mentioned at the beginning of this little session that people in England, and particularly in the north of England, dropped their Hs.That doesnt happen all the time. And there are certain words in English where its possible to drop the H and we dont pronounce it.Words like:honesthonourheirhourThere are a number of English words where it is appropriate to drop Hs.Now be careful. There are other words and particularly people in those Mediterranean countries like Italy, France and Spain where they have a tendency to drop Hs on words where we shouldnt drop them.I dont wish to cause you any harm. It’s not I don’t wish to cause you any arm.And this wonderful little cute animal the hedgehog. Often you hear the edgehog. What is an edgeog?Ah its a hedgehog.Nice little spiky friend that walks across your lawn in the middle of the night.Hedgehog. H. Hedge-hog.So get that h sound: hedgehog, hedgehog. Not an edgeog. You try it. Hedgehog.Once again. Hedgehog.hedgehog you try it.So we dont drop those Hs.I dont wish you any harm. The hedgehog is a wonderful animal.Theres also a tendency to drop the h in hotel.I stayed in a hotel. It’s not I stayed in a otel.I cant hear you properly. It’s not I can’t ear you properly. The ground is very hard. Hard meaning tough. It’s not the ground is very ard.The mountain was huge. It’s not the mountain was uge.Hello.It’s not ello. You try them:harmhedgehoghugehellohotelhearhard So now to some funny and strange sounding words with the letter S.And again some of the Mediterranean students that I have will recognise these sounds.Lets talk about two words.SHIPThe ship sailed on the ocean. Ship. And the SHEEPThe sheep in the field. These words can, if youre not careful, sound very similar.Where is the ship?Where are the sheep?Very strange.SHIP. Its got a short I. We have to have a very certain sharp sound. Like the word IT. Its not eat. It’s IT.And we want the same sound in SHIP.The ship is on the ocean.SHEEPLong e. Sheep like the word eat.We eat our dinner. We dont it our dinner.Ship is on the ocean.Sheep running around the field. Two other words that cause problems.SHEETA sheet of paper.Could you please pass me a sheet of paper?Again you got that long e sound like this sheep. But its not a shit of paper. It’s not it.A bit funny a shit of paper but were talking about a sheet of paper. So if you go into your office and you ask your colleaguecan you pass me a shi t of paper What? Theyll be a little bit surprised. So it is a sheet of paper. We can talk about shit some other time. You might find the video or the movie you watched shit. But when were talking about the sheet of paper it’s SHEET.You try it:sheepshipsheetThats our lesson today on pronunciation. I hope youveenjoyed it and youve understood a little of the problems that students can come across. And all it is is practice, practice and practice.Get yourself a good teacher.Listen, practise. Listen and practise and repeat. Repeat to get those sounds right. So as always subscribe to my channel and join me on www.englishlessonviaskype.comAnd when you get there, make sure you look out for the new announcement of my Easy Peasy English Club. This is a wonderful new invention by me where you can join the club.In that club you will get one free lesson every week. How to Win Time by Losing the Calculator on the GRE

How to Win Time by Losing the Calculator on the GRE GRE/MAT Graduate School Blog The GRE may not be a fun test, but it’s also not a cruel test. Unlike other standardized exams you need to take to get into grad school, the GRE lets you use a calculator on the Quantitative section. In fact, the GRE actually providesyou with a calculator. This is great news for every test-taker with a fatal allergy to mental math (I’m looking at you, Humanities people). The people who write the GRE know that there is a large segment of people taking this test who use the calculator app on their phones every time they have to split the pizza bill up five ways. But that calculator is on-screen, which means you have to do a lot of clicking any time you want to make a calculation. It’s actually incredibly annoying to use and, furthermore, can eat up a lot of time. In reality, while the GRE provides you with a calculator, the test is really designed to benefit people who know how to avoidusing one. Why Should I Avoid the Calculator If It's Right There? Like I mentioned earlier, using that calculator takes time. On top of taking the time to punch numbers into a poorly designed calculator interface, you have to jot down results to keep track of relevant values. Going back and forth between these steps as you solve a problem might only add 20 extra seconds to the problem you’re working on. But if you take that extra 20 seconds on 12 problems, then you’ve wasted four minutes of your allotted time on the Quantitative section just crunching numbers. Remember, the game with the GRE is all about getting as many points as possible. Sure, that means you should make sure you’re answering as many questions correctly as you can. But you also need to make sure you have time to see allthe questions on the test and give them a fair shot. Every second of exam time is precious, and any that you can buy yourself will only help you devote more time to picking up every single point you possibly can. So How Do I Cut Back on My Calculator Use? There are a few surefire ways to cut back on your calculator use. Memorize the simple stuff. You should know your multiplication tables up to a factor of 12 as well as the squares of 1 through 20. Know the Pythagorean triples, there aren’t many. Make sure you’re at least somewhat familiar with all the prime numbers under 100. Develop useful devices for quick mental math. Division rules are really useful for figuring out, roughly, what you’ll get when you divide two numbers. Use simple percents to figure out more complex ones. For instance, you can figure out 40% of 70 easily. 10% of 70 is 7, so 40% is 4 * 7, or 28. Estimate, estimate, estimate.Don’t forget that this is a process of elimination test. You can get far on this exam by doing some rough calculations in your head and eliminating any answer choices that you know for a fact won’t work. Let’s look at an example to see some estimation in action: While you could easily set up some algebra and solve for r, you can do some really quick calculations in your head to eliminate answer choices. First off, we know that we’re trying to figure out what percent of $6,000 equals $840, since that’s the difference between the original amount of money and the new amount including interest. Well, 10% of $6,000 is $600, so 10% is too low. That means we can eliminate answer choices A and B since those are smaller. What about 15%? Well, that’s 10% of $6,000 plus 5% of $6,000, which is $600 plus $300, or $900. That’s too big, so we can eliminate answer choice E also, since that’s higher than 15%. Between B and C, which seems better? Well, $840 isn’t muchless than $900, which means we probably want the answer closest to 15%. That’s answer choice D, which is indeed the correct one. A top-notch GRE strategy absolutely includes methods like these for avoiding calculator work. About the Author Mike S. is one of our most experienced test prep tutors. ?? Three exercises to manage your mental fitness when you feel the exam pressure rising

?? Three exercises to manage your mental fitness when you feel the exam pressure rising Three exercises to manage your mental fitness when you feel the exam pressure rising Preparing for exams is like an athlete preparing for a race â€" it isn’t just about the technical revision, it is also important to look at the whole picture â€" diet, sleep, down time for rest and recuperation, and mental preparation. We know stress can be a good thing â€" it can certainly give an athlete the boost they need to get across the finish line, but like anything too much can be a bad thing and can derail the best efforts and intentions. In this article I will share three things you can do to support your mental health whilst you study, and three steps to take if you feel your stress levels are rising and affecting your ability to study. But before I talk about what you can do to manage your stress, I want to explain what happens in your brain when you are too stressed and why this is important. One brain â€" two mindsThink of yourself as having one brain but two minds - the first part is our intellectual mind (the left pre-frontal cortex). When we are in this part we are p ositive, wise, and will make the best possible decisions at any given time. So obviously this is where we want to be! The second part is our primitive mind (the limbic system) and this is the part that controls our fight or flight response â€" our survival instinct. This part is really useful when we face life or death situations such as facing a wild animal like a tiger, but the thing is we don’t really face many life or death situations anymore. But guess what? Your primitive mind still reacts in the same way. Those pesky negative thoughtsSo say you start thinking about your revision and your mind drifts to negative thoughts â€" you think about all the work you have to do and you don’t know how you are going to get through it, you might think that you’re not smart enough, you’re going to fail, and lots of other negative thoughts like that. Now you start to feel the stress build up. You might notice it â€" that ball of tension in your stomach, your heart rate is increasing, your muscles are tensing, you can’t focus on anything, you can’t sleep, or you get stuck doing unhelpful things like spending too much time on Instagram or Snapchat. Exam Prep â€" it’s coming to get me!This is happening because although your intellectual mind sees the exams as what they really are, your primitive mind sees them as life threatening as a tiger attack! Now all it wants you to do is fight, run away or freeze in the face of this imminent danger, and that usually results in unhelpful behaviours like organising your study plan over and over but not actually doing any study, leaving things to the last minute, or just not being able to focus on anything at all. Another unfortunate thing is if the primitive mind is in control it also reduces our intelligence and our ability to cope with life. Not so great when you’re trying to study for your exams is it?But there are things you can do to keep you in your intellectual mind so you can perform at your best.Three tools t o support your mental healthLike I said at the start, just as an athlete has a whole load of tools in their kit bag to ensure success, you have too. The three main ones are:1. SleepI can’t emphasise this one enough, and this is because during sleep, particularly when we dream, we clear out the stress and anxiety built up during the day. It has been found that even one poor night’s sleep can affect brain function. So if you do anything I would recommend getting on top of this. I like these great tips from Harvard Medical School.2. ExerciseOften when you are studying you think you don’t have time to exercise, or you can put it off for another day, but exercise is so important for three reasons:It releases positive neurotransmitters and hormones (like serotonin, the “feel good” hormone) which make you feel happier, braver and able to cope better with the stresses of life (like exams!).It helps to relax your muscles, and when that happens it sends a message to the mind that it can relax too.It makes you smarter! How? Because when we exercise we grow new neurons and pathways in our brain, and there are reports of students in America increasing their grades by doing regular exercise. One student said he went from getting B’s and C’s to A’s and B’s just by exercising before class every day.How much exercise?Aim for aerobic exercise where you are puffing a bit and find it difficult to talk for about 25-40 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week. If you did some exercise every day that would be a bonus, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself if that seems too much. Even going for a walk for 10 minutes can help boost your mood. 3. Keep doing things you enjoyIt’s very tempting to put on hold all your hobbies, stop seeing friends or doing anything fun whilst you are revising because you don’t have time for it. Obviously it is important to devote adequate time to your revision, but to stop doing all the things you enjoy will have a detrimental effect on your stress levels. Because when we do things we enjoy, we release those positive neurotransmitters that keep us happy, healthy and confident. So fit in some enjoyable activities into your schedule â€"your mind and body will love you for it!Three steps if you feel the Stress buildingSleep, exercise and fun activities support your mental wellbeing, but what do you do if you feel the stress building up and you can’t focus or concentrate? I’m now going to share a process based on my hypnotherapy sessions which can help. Even if you are pretty good at staying focused and on top of things, incorporating this into your daily practice will still benefit you.Ste p 1: Write down positive thoughtsWrite down all the good things that have recently happened or are happening in your life, or all the things you are grateful for. Think of 10 things if you can, and make sure you write them down. It could literally be as small as you enjoyed your walk this morning, or it was great seeing your best friend on the weekend. The reason for this is also based in science â€" if you are thinking about good things you can’t be in your primitive mind because the primitive mind is always negative. I had a client who suffered from panic attacks, and when they felt one coming on they remembered their hypnotherapy sessions and started thinking about all the good things, and it worked! They were able to stop the panic attack. Step 2: Work out the next stepThink about your “To Do” list. What one small thing would make the most difference to your happiness right now? The reason why this question is important because often the stress builds up when there is too much to do, so what can happen is you get stuck and do nothing, or the work you do is ineffective (the headless chicken scenario). It could literally be “open my maths text book to page 7, and start the first example question”. Think about the next step right in front of you, not the end result. Because taking one step at a time will get you working towards achieving your goals.Step 3: Listen to a relaxation/mindfulness meditation Doing this will get your mind into a calm mental state we call “trance”. The reason why this is useful is that it allows access to the subconscious mind, where you have the potential to make powerful positive changes. It also helps to clear the stress out of your system. There are a lot of different Apps or relaxation/meditation downloads to try. Whatever you choose I would recommend it is at least 20 minutes long. I have a free relaxation download which is approx. 30 minutes long. It is focused on reducing stress and increasing confidence, but you will find benefit for whatever you need help with right now. Remember though, just like an athlete you don’t become good at something overnight â€" you have to practice at it. So putting the above into practice on a regular basis will help you deal with your stress and get you thinking positively, acting positively, and performing at your best. Good luck! 10 Career Options for People Who Want to Make a Difference

10 Career Options for People Who Want to Make a Difference Image via pexels.com Career options for bettering kids’ futures: 1.  Education Pursuing a career in education is sometimes overlooked when people think of ways to make a difference in the world. The truth is,  teaching is one of the most important paths to creating change. You will educate the young minds who are responsible for the future. Change will come from what you teach your studentsâ€"on top of basic school subjects, teach them to be leaders. You can motivate your students to want to make a difference themselves. It may not seem like you’re making a difference directly, but the changes will start with you. A career in education  doesn’t have to mean teaching in a classroom  if you don’t think it’s right for you. For example, you can assist students with learning disabilities. Living with a learning disability is likely not easy for themâ€"give the students a safe space. Help them learn in a way that works for them but be a friend to them as well. If you can empower even just one student, you will make a difference. 2. Social work As a social worker, you can  directly change the lives of children in need  as well as advocate for substance abusers, domestic violence survivors, mental health patients, and more. You will provide clients with the necessary resources to succeed and counsel them through trauma, unemployment, obstacles to education, addiction, and poverty. Many social workers are associated with governmental agencies, but there are also jobs in schools, nonprofit organizations, and hospitals. If you choose to specialize in working with children, you might be responsible for easing the transition between foster homes or protecting them from abusive households. In addition, you will work with the parents or guardians to improve the family’s life as a whole. Social work doesn’t always mean helping unstable households, though. According to Social Work Licensure, “they respond to crises in the classroom and assess and counsel school children who are experiencing stress, acting out, and/or being targeted by bullies.” In these cases, you might lead prevention groups or conduct training sessions about prevention. 3.  Child psychology If you’re drawn in by the counseling aspect of social work, then studying child psychology may lead to other career options for you. Psychologists can provide support for children with mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression, and give them a place to be open about their feelings. You may wish to become a school psychologist and guide children (and their parents) through education while coping with mental illness or trauma. As a psychologist, therapist, or counselor, you will help your patients find the source of trauma or stress and discover ways of reducing or eliminating the issue. You may even conduct your own research on new treatment methods. Learn the differences between psychologists, counselors, and therapists here, and see which career is right for you. Helping patients improve their minds can inspire them to create change, too. Image via pexels.com Career options for creating a better environment: 4.    Sustainability How can you help make businesses more environmentally-friendly? Create some green differences by pursuing sustainability-based career options. For instance,  as a chief sustainability officer or director, you can work within any company that wants to put effort into helping the environment. Your job will entail monitoring the company’s environmental impacts and determining where they can make eco-friendly changes. You will also assist with budgeting for these changesâ€"they can be priceyâ€"and ensure that the company reaches its environmental goals. You also  have the option to advise multiple companies  and government agencies on their environmental impacts as an environmental engineer. In this job, your goal will be to minimalize the harm that big projects do to the environment. You might help agencies start their own recycling programs, write up new policies, or create plans to reduce water and air pollution over time. The changes won’t be immediateâ€"you might not see mass environmental improvements in your lifetime. Sustainability, after all, means to  maintain something at a certain level, but the earth needs to get to that better level first before it can be maintained. However, you can improve the world for later generations, which means you’ll be making a huge difference. 5.  Environmental science We can’t help the environment if we don’t know anything about it. To study existing environmental trends and develop new green technology, consider a career in environmental science. Again, you may work for government agencies or individual companies if you choose to be an environmental scientist. These scientists split time between the field and the office and use their knowledge of the earth and its species to develop policies that protect everyone. There are plenty of similar science jobs, too. Study water as a hydrogeologist and help maintain a safe drinking water supply for everyone. Build new solar power platforms for homes and companies to receive an alternative energy source as a solar power project developer. Become a geoscientist to study the history of the earth’s composition and discover where to find natural resources. You can even specialize in maintaining parks and forests as a conservation specialist. If the science part isn’t so much for you, you can still fight for the rights of the earth as an environmental lawyer. Defend policies meant to protect the environment and keep clients informed of issues that arise in things like air quality and hazardous waste. Image via pexels.com Career options for keeping others safe: 6.  Crime investigation Solve cases and catch criminals by pursuing a career in crime investigation. Keep in mind that it won’t always be glamorous (television might give you the wrong idea… or the right idea. Have you watched  Criminal Minds? It’s not pretty). Even though your job will be done after the crime is committed, you can prevent more similar crimes and possibly save many lives by solving one case. Sometimes, with the right leads and a gut intuition, you may be able to prevent a crime from happening in the first place. Consider being a crime scene investigator, police officer, or a detective. You can find work with federal agencies, private investigating firms, or local law enforcement. Maybe a job in criminal justice/investigation interests you, but you’re wary of putting yourself in possible danger. That fear is okay to have, and there is good newsâ€"you can solve crime from behind the scenes, as well. Computer forensic investigators  find and analyze data from crimes  committed on the computer, such as hacking or internet stalking. Someone also needs to analyze evidence in a labâ€"this is where forensic scientists do their work. Perhaps one of these career options is right for you. Your role will be vitalâ€"you provide the necessary analytic details for solving a crime. 7.  Armed forces You may also choose to enter an active duty military branch. Pilots, soldiers, and nurses might be the first careers that come to mind when you think of the military, and you may wish to pursue these options, but the field is much more diverse than that.  There are plenty of unique career options  in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, or Coast Guard fit for people of all backgrounds with many different interests. For example, if you have experience working in auto shops or have an interest in the inner workings of cars and machinery, you should look into automobile maintenance in the Army. In this position, you will ensure that all equipment is safe to use and up to military standards. You might supervise other technicians and order or repair equipment parts. A Coast Guard Boatswain Mate must be a jack-of-all-trades at sea. You might find yourself conducting search and rescue missions, supervising maintenance, or operating ship machinery, and that is only a few tasks. There are even positions for studying languages. Army Linguists are in high demandâ€"so much that there is a $40,000 enlistment incentive, according to  Learn How to Become. You can work as a Strategic Linguist, translating documents from all over the world in an office. Or, you can work in the field as a Tactical Linguist, speaking to citizens in person and gathering information in other languages. While these positions are all very different, they all play such a crucial role in completing military tasks. There are hundreds of career possibilitiesâ€"see a full list here. 8.  Emergency personnel Emergency response teams play a vital role in saving lives, homes, and businesses before emergencies get worse. You will create change with every rescue and those involved will be ever grateful. As a firefighter, you can prevent disaster from spreading and save families from huge losses. Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) play a vital role in providing care to injured patients on their way to a hospitalâ€"without this work, a life might be lost during the ambulance ride. When you take on a role as a policeman, you can keep situations from escalating or quickly take action in ones that already have escalated. Dispatchers are incredibly important components to emergency response teams. If you choose this route, it will be your job to send the right team to the right address as fast as possible and ensure that the person who called 9-1-1 is safe and calm enough to provide you with this information. These career options take a lot of training and you need to be quick on your feet, but they are some of the most rewarding ways to make a difference. Infographic created by Elise Nelson via Canva Career options for building the community: 9.  Economics All communities have their own economies built by businesses, culture, architecture, and people. The way in which a community uses their money plays a big part in how it will develop. If you choose to pursue a career in economics, you can help these communities grow through jobs like urban planning. Urban planners work with both public and private groups, such as property owners and corporations, to come up with the best uses for land that promote economic and environmentally-friendly growth. To directly help communities spend their money wisely, you can become an economist. You will assess where funds can help revitalize the community as a whole and benefit its people. A better economy is one of the most important steps in eliminating poverty. 10.  Community service   Community service is often done through volunteer work, but that doesn’t mean there are no career options embedded in it. You may be able to work your way up through the ranks within a nonprofit organization and become a leader. Someone needs to oversee the service projects, right? That person needs a good mind with the motivation to make a difference, and it could be you. In the meantime, there are several community revitalization groups to join forces with. Americorps, Peace Corps, and United We Serve are national service programs that work to fight poverty, increase academic achievement, prepare for and clean up after national disasters, and sustain national parks. Habitat For Humanity builds homes with affordable mortgages for communities in need. Similarly, Rebuilding Together repairs damaged homes with the help of volunteers to avoid expensive repair costs and revitalizes small communities. As a branch of AmeriCorps, Teach For America “is  a diverse network of leaders who confront educational inequity through teaching and work with unwavering commitment from every sector of society to create a nation free from this injustice.” They aim for each child to have an equal opportunity for growth. Mentor Foundation USA has a similar goal, offering children one-on-one support through daily challenges and guiding them to success. Family Support Services, The Family Support Center, and the Center for Family Services focus on assisting families who have fallen beneath the poverty line or experienced trauma. There are plenty more organizations where these came from. Choose one that interests you and start making a difference. For more career options, check out this blog post that ranks careers by their potential to make a difference in the world.
